I have been searching for a minitonner for some time now, and have researched and looked at a few designs now but in Northern Ireland there is not a great variety. However there is a large fleet of Sonatas racing as a one design class with close racing but my question is is how does a Sonata stack up against the Limbos, E-Boats, Harriers, Foxterriers, Glass Onions and one offs under the IRC handicap system?

A well set up Sonata is incredibly quick on flat water. they won't plane, but they are giant killers upwind. This is why they sold in large numbers, and are still competitively raced all over the place. Their downside is, their in line shrouds make the rig a little fragile. and they can "trip up" down wind in a blow, due to the tuck David Thomas designed in to the stern underwater profile.

Thanks for the information, I have discounted a Sonata because of the strict one design, can't experiment with it without destroying its' resell value. Ideally I would like a planing hull for good downwind performance, still looking.
