Hi
Has anyone got any experience in replacing the keel bolts on a fox terrier and generally sorting out the keel bolt area?
I've just bought one a few weeks ago , had a couple of great sails but a dragging mooring has put paid to the sailing season for this year and it's time to get started with the winter jobs!
Any tips / advice on fox terriers much appreciated!

See "Sealing a keel case" in this section of the forum. You're not the only one to have problems! The Foxterrier and Harrier, either lifting or fixed, all use the same keel. Undo the nuts and see how the studs look where they pass through the hull. I've got a spare keel with reconditioned studs at work if things look really bad.

The top of the studs on mine are pretty badly rusted, - no chance of getting the nuts off as they are a corroded away.
There is an Engineering Shop next to the club and I'm going to ask their advice now it's out the water as I think it may be beyond my skill level!
The lifting point on the keel is also pretty poor shape so the whole lot needs a bit of TLC. The previous owner kept the keel down permanently and I think that this may have taken its toll on the bolts and studs.
If poss, could you send me some pics to see what it should look like?

I'm not back work until next week but I'll take some photos then. It sounds like your keel is in a very simular state to mine when I bought the boat a few years ago. I gave the nuts a good wacking with a big hammer and old screw driver and they crumbled away which ment I could remove the top box and sort the whole lot out. I changed my keel last winter and the original keel/ topbox with beefier lifting point is sat waiting to go to the scrap yard, so don't waste too much money getting yours fixed.

If you still have the top box and keel available, could you drop me a pm? Just taken the top box off and it looks like dropping the keel, drilling out the studs and re-tapping the keel is the only option.
The studs are well and truly shot and stuck in the keel!

Well, that's the new studs in and the new lifting plate made - just need to put it all back together again! A bit of glassing to do to strengthen the keel box when it goes back in, then a quick coat of paint on the bottom and off we go! Attachments:

Hi all I have just bought a Foxterier and having read this topic have been and had a good look at the keel bolts, two of the bolts (the ones at each end) are fitted with very eroded anodes. I have seen many sizes and shapes of anodes but nothing to fit, any one have any idea were I can get such a thing. Also the ballast around the keel case seems to have expanded and pushed the internal woodwork away from the hull I have removed some of this with an air chisel and am going to re glass the woodwork, any more of your keel and keel box photos would be of great help.

I'll try and remember to take some pictures next weekend. So far my keel box has only needed some additional strength adding to the corners where it had cracked, this is where the keel has moved during hoisting / lowering but other than that the ballast, etc so far appears fine.
There were no anodes or anything on my studs and when I hit them with a hammer last winter they fell appart. I needed to get the studs drilled out and the keel re tapped as they were too far gone to be removed from the keel by unscrewing. Fortunately there is a handy engineering shop next to our club and Brian has a very large piller drill that could fit the keel under it!
