Hello all, where is the best and most importantly the cheapest place to dry sail a boat from in the solent area, i am thinking that it may be cheaper to get rid of the big fuel hungry van and just leave my boat somewhere where i can do 90% of the events that i want to do. cheers Ant C

£450 a year at you know where. I've had a look around and haven't found anywhere else near that price.

Ant, I think Rowan's right - BH is hard to beat on price, location or general setup. I have been to most places on my travels and most aren't geared up for dry sailing. If they are, then they aren't as central for the action.
My boat lives out on a yacht club mooring during the summer which is cheap enough and actually quite convenient - but there are draw backs to that as well......

Ant - We have a little 4x4 Vitara we keep for the job, but there is a beat up landrover kept down there for launching. I believe it's £100 a year for a set of keys and you put your own fuel in. Only trouble might be if someone else is using it when you want to which is why I don't use it. I'd be well up for chipping in on a wreck we could leave down there/share. It's a shallow grippy slip so you wouldn't need much to pull your boat out. I've seen bigger boats than yours dragged out with 1.6ltr hatchbacks.

I am pleased to say that there has been a couple of resposes to this, amazing how a spot of sun focuses ones mind on boating! I thought I would post a specamin reply so you could see what i was up to and where i was comming from with this.
"The published cost of Dry Berthing is the same as an annual berth for a similar sized vessel, in this case £2629.95, however as an introductory offer and with the aim of expanding the mini ton fleet here I am offering a £500.00 discount on that figure. I am hoping that this figure once people have worked out the cost of a mooring and winter storage and the inconvenience of getting boats on and of trailer, will prove a competitive option. As a Dry Berther , you would be entitled to most of the benefits of the premier advantage, which include 42 free visitor nights at the other marinas in the group, discounted insurance and fuel + electric at cost (not that I would imagine you use a great deal of either. We also operate a “refer a friend scheme”, whereby if you manage to bring another customer into the marina based on you positive experience, we credit both your accounts with £250.00
The way dry berthing works here, is that for the summer months you are entitled to unlimited lifts and launches and movements to or from the holding pontoon. For the winter period you would be stored either afloat or ashore for the period. For those choosing to be afloat for the winter I could be talked into the odd lift and scrub, conversely for those boats ashore the odd lift and launch would be available while the vessel was accessible. If you are not familiar with Southsea, we are located by the entrance to Langstone Harbour and are a tidal marina. The cill gate at the entrance allows access 3 hours either side of high tide, however as part of your berthing fee we provide a valet service between the marina and our holding pontoon outside which has access at all states of the tide. So should you be unable to get to the marina during gate opening hours, with advance notice we can move the boat outside for you, and vice versa should you return at low tide you can leave the boat outside and we can move it back in for you on the next working day. This goes some way to getting round any tidal restrictions.
Bembridge, Portsmouth (Portsmouth sailing club run a very good autumn and spring IRC series) Chichester and Cowes are all within reasonable striking distance. The local sailing club offers regular Wednesday evening racing as well as various other races during the course of the year, the back bone of the fleet is a couple of mini and Quarter tonners, various more cruising orientated boats and a fleet of 3 or so multihulls.
The marina is fully serviced with toilet and shower facilities, electric supply to all pontoons, water, and a full boatyard service. We also have tenants on site who provide engineering, boat repair, sail/cover repair, and a host of other marine services within a stone’s throw of the marina. We also have two restaurants on site, an Indian and a soon to be open Thai Restaurant.
If you would like to visit us to get a feel for the marina and environment we would warmly welcome you to pop in for a coffee and a chat and we can show you the facilities on offer. If you would like to visit or any further information then please don’t hesitate to contact me.
I guess there are a couple of aspects to this, I am on mission to promote sailing and racing in the Eastern Solent, which is more cost effective and less fraught than the Hamble corridor, as well as collecting a decent fleet of similar boats and like- minded individuals on site".
You know it makes sense!
Best to all
Rupert
