Right just some food for thought as the class grows. I have now read 3 or 4 articles on the 1980 Mini Ton Cup and also when the cup was held in Lymington.
To me it seems like we are all becoming a bunch of wimps in our old age, because back then they raced in the top end of 40 knots while doing 53 mile offshore races. They also had qualifying events to compete in the cup! Granted times have changed slightly.
Whats peoples thoughts on regatta formats, such a three or four day regatta's which could interest people to travel more. Also in those three or four day regattas have a mix of course's from windward leewards, olympic style course, round the cans and coastal / mini offshore long distance races? This would make it more finacially viable for people travelling to the event as they are getting more bang for their buck, and would give a wider range of courses to really put these boats through their paces which may favour some more than others on some course's etc etc which could make things alittle more interesting.
This isnt something that will happen over night, but is something which could be worth considering in years to come as the class grows, so whats peoples thoughts?

i really like the idea of passage races, channel / Irish sea. the only thing to consider is the boats aren't as bullet proof as they use to be so Plymouth to Brittany may be excessive but dover Calais would be brilliant.

Never mind the bullets, there's hardly any of them, it's the dirty great big waves you've got to worry about!

PaulD are you going to share those race reports with us soon? Think we would all be interested in them Ta

Passage races sounds like a fantastic idea. Although going across the channel might be a bit of a stretch, at least for the moment, a race (for example) from the Solent to Weymouth along the coast isn't too exposed but still a pretty decent distance.

There are two i could probably scan and post but one of them I would have to type up as it is on a big tabloid size newspaper in balck and white. I will see what I can do.
Ken, the coastal race sounds good. I know up in the morth east they have coastal races from venue to venue as feeder races to each regatta.

Why don't we just go ahead with a coastal race? Matt - what do you think? Doesn't matter if not too many boats as we have to start somewhere.
I'll attempt to put it together, even if it's just me in the end...
So, as a proposal:
Friday eve meet Cowes/Lymington/Beuleieu, Sat am start (off Cowes?) to Weymouth. Sat eve fish/chips in Weymouth, Sunday back? Run under Minitonner Class Rules.
I'll make contact with some of the guys from Weymouth Sailing Club I know, lets have a look at tides and dates.
Anyone here good with a camera? We really need to get some nice shots out to the mages and website to get the class more talked about.
No one is going to do it for us, so we should just do it for ourselves (with apologies to Sister Sledge)

RYSC Double Handed series includes a Weymouth and back race along with a number of other passage type races. Well run and realtively cheap. I hear a cool little minitonner won the series in class 4 last year

I've suggested before that we could enter JOG races in IRC 5 where there are already two Sonatas.

This sounds like fun chaps and I definately like the ideas. Such a race could be relatively cheap and fun for all and would also be challenging. However, Weymouth is actually quite along way for a weekend in a Mini Tonner and so it may well end up being a longer gig than was bargained for. Can I suggest that a good alternative/test/start out event would be a weekend race from the Solent over to Poole and then back? (and that's probably a long enough sail as its 5 hours plus from Cowes to Poole harbour.....) On the plus side, Poole Quay is absolutely brimming with pubs (so if we can't have a good night out there it's a VERY poor do!) Poole is a great place for other halves and friends (including the Poole Mini Tonners) to all meet up and it's not so far that we couldn't easily even leave the boats if the weather turns pooh or crew want to go only one way etc. Maybe MT'ers coming from afar to help crew and join in the social fun? There is lots of accomodation there too.... Ken if you fancy picking a suitable weekend then I'll list it and it's a go'er. If it works and gets enough participation then we can try going further or in other directions on the next one.... Matt
