Does a Stephen Jones designed Hunter Formula One rate as a mini tonner? I know it is a one design class and still has and active association but can it race in mini tonner events?

A hunter brochure i came across somewhere on line had them with an ior of 18.5. Minis were 16.5 although the hunters raced 1 design with 3 crew which is how minis were sailed back in the dark ages but length wise would be to short to be a 1/4 tonner. They were built in the 80s so within the age limit

Okay, so it probably falls between two stools, its IOR rating is too big for a mini tonner and its length is too small for a quarter tonner, how does its current IRC rating place it in relation to mini and quarter tonners?

The 1/4 ton class and mini ton class rules dont go on current irc ratings they base the classes on the ton class the boat fell into. There are wide variations between irc ratings across the two classes. My mini tonner rates higher then some 1/4 tons on irc. Id say the HF1 is probably closer to a mini then a 1/4. Someone on here will probably know better then me and one of the class commitee will probably be able to give you a definite answer

That could be a problem, there is no mini ton class in ireland yet. There is interest from some of us on here to get a class going so will depend on what happens over the winter (maybe dublin based event in 2014 but need to badger the sailing sec in my club to get it done) where in ireland are you?

Have you much of a fleet up there that could do mini ton class? Im in howth, we have 3 minis in the club at the moment but have about 20 puppeter 1 designs that would prob get into being minis. In dublin bay clontarf have a fleet of e boats and in dun laoghaire there are a few sonatas and the ruffians which maybe classes as a mini

For a massive stretch of water it is totally under used, our club has about seven or eight boats that race on a regular basis, we have a couple of Sonatas but no other mini tonners The other two clubs on the lough have a few more, there are a few quarter tonners but all in all the three clubs would find it hard to muster fifty boats of all classes between them.

We have looked at Formula One's inclusion before and decided that they neither raced off the correct IOR rating at any time, nor we're they really designed in the same 'spirit' (for instance look at the design similarities Sonata v Foxterrier).....
For the MT class it's important that the performance characteristics and racing on the water is kept close and the F1's have a planning hull and more recent rig design, so unfortunately we cannot include them.
The good news there are still loads of legit Mini tonners available and Ireland seems to have most of them!!! Can't wait to hear of the Irish MT's getting themselves an event 2014 ?

Alot of the minis in ireland are production one designs who dont race under irc or out of their one design fleet. If we can get a host club and convince a few of the one ðesigns to come play in a handicap fleet there would be a good turnout. Few other boats around that would be questionable as minis.

Neris, will put a suggestion to the club at next AGM that they consider hosting an event, they were talking about putting on an open event this year for dinghies but it never got off the ground due to lack of time. As I said Lough Neagh is totally under utilized. On another topic does anyone know of any Intros for sale in Ireland, if this Formula One deal does not go through I might look in that direction, I sailed one a long time ago and have fond memories of that wee boat and at least it is a known mini tonner?

Had a look at the one in UK, no road trailer, however swmbo has decreed my current boat must go before new one can be bought, so am not in any rush to buy just yet, will wait and see what appears on market over winter period.
