Hi All,
Having set up this Class and Website in 2009 and subsequently organised several successful Mini Ton events, I am now having to step down as Class Coordinator.
I would be very pleased to see the running of the Class taken over by some other Mini Ton Yacht Owners, as I have been on my own with the organisational work for a few years now. Additionally, as I no longer own a Mini Ton Yacht myself, it would be nice to see that the Class's direction was being determined by those who have most to gain.
So, if you would like to help and ensure the continuation of the Mini Ton Class then please let me know as soon as possible. I would be happy to discuss what is involved at any time. Please just email me, or call me at Kemp Sails.
Thanks..Matt

Hallo all minitonner owners
in the absence of any reply to Matt's post, I am attaching what I wrote to Matt in April. If there is no volunteer to be found, all Matt's work over the last few years will be for nothing, which would be very sad. I will happily support as far as possible, but as a non-UK resident I cannot coordinate a UK-based event. Someone has to stand up and volunteer....
Richard Salter in Germany with (still) a pretty Italian boat in UK.
Matt first an enormous thank you for all you have achieved at the helm. The website and the support from Kemp Sails has helped enormously, and you are clearly the driving force behind these two key factors. I am not about to offer myself to take over, because as a non-UK resident, I could not do what is necessary to make things happen for the annual party in the Solent (anywhere else would never work in my opinion). What I can offer is to support as "overseas representative", trying to encourage various owners from all over western europe to come and play. At the same time I have gathered many photos and info on MT's history and only need a little nudge to do something constructive with all that I have. I had an email today from a brit in Portugal (Faro Algarve) who has bought Creola, the boat that creamed Secondanita in MTC 1985, and such contacts are a direct result of what you have set in motion. The class has reached a critical mass for one regatta a year in the solent, and the next step will only happen when a few come out to play from further away. I have been delinquent in that I may still not make it this year, dependent on my overload at home trying to get our house properly finished, and my 92 year old mother in a home near Liss. However if I forego my Yanmar and sail with a piddling little outboard instead, then this year is still possible!?
The way forward may be: Find someone to run the website - this is critical as it links everyone, Find someone well connected around the solent or not too far away who can organise the annual August gathering, or perhaps better said, make it happen on a self-financing basis, Nominate a committee who should make decisions, with email the committee members do not have to be solent or even uk based, Contemplate encouraging owners of non-IRC optimised boats to take part. I will never do full IRC optimisation on mine, but must swallow the handicap hit of so many wires up my mast. It's a bit of IOR history that I want to preserve. Maybe others think they will not be competitive and so don't come......but someone has to bring up the rear in any fleet! and you meet nice people back there.
I look forward to sailing all over europe in the future, and meeting other lunatics in Algarve, maybe Ireland, Italy, France, Germany, Devon/Cornwall, and of course in Cowes.
Please convey thanks to your employers from the whole class for their support
regards from germany richard

I have emailed Matt to thank him for his efforts in organising and running this class for the past six years. His concern is that unless someone steps up fairly soon the class will collapse. Sadly my personal circumstances have changed markedly in tbe past few years and I no longer have the opportunity to sail.

OK guys it's time to stand up and be counted. Matt's hard work over the years must not be lost. We need a few volunteers. 1) a coordinator for MTC in Cowes - I can't do that from my seat in foreign parts. But ISC want it to happen and therefore should not be too arduous. 2) website boss. I am willing to shoot at that one, but may need help until I understand how it works. Additionally I have a significant collection of photos and other historical info on MT's which I would love to get into the public domain (mostly thanks to Ian Watson for this) 3) someone to be called secretary/treasurer who does a weeny bit of admin to ensure that things like website costs are covered - we cannot assume that Kemps continue will pay for this. 4) regional contacts whose responsibilities are to be defined, mostly as first point of contact for MT owners. 5) maybe a "boats in rebuild coordinator", can give indications of new arrivals on the scene as they become seaworthy.
I am more determined than ever to sail this summer, my boat is now in the same country as I am so i have better chances.
Matt can you fire this mail to your email list so as many as possible see itand react.
Happy 2016 to all Richard Salter

Richard
I,ll act as a contact point/coordinator for Ireland however I feel this maybe a fruitless task as most of our minis here are one designs who have no interest in IRC or travelling. I think the difference between our class and size of boats and the 1/4 & 1/2s is they are far more competitive cheque book sailors where most mini owners sail for fun and to particpate. I think for alot of owners the idea of getting a boat by road or sea to and from an event and trying to organise a crew is a pain in the rear. Just going off the number of posts on here over the last year or so there does seem to be a lack of interest in the class.

Cillian, first of all thank you for stepping up. Maybe there are many boats out there which are put off by measurement/rating. We already have a trophy for ISC handicap, and this should perhaps be seen as a class for non-IRC-optimised boats to encourage more people to come. Anyone with original rig and keel will give a lot of handicap away (under IRC) to an optimised boat. Ours isn't working like the QT's because they can put out 20-30 fully IRC-optimised boats and everyone perceives that there are chances for nearly everyone. Our class as far as I can see is for people looking for lower-cost fun than QT's. The one design classes Sonata and others will not optimise as they cannot then race in their own class. So a question to all - would you come to the MTC if we could provide racing with a fair handicap for IRC'd and more original boats? Or if it was spread over 2 days with more round the cans and less windward leeward (which I personally dislike after some year of dinghy sailing)? Please give your opinions so we can find a way forward. When Secondanita eventually surfaces she will be in near original IOR optimised condition.
Please respond..Richard Salter

Okay everybody, nobody is apparently willing to take the helm, so I offer myself as a potential "Coordinator" for the class. There are some aspects which I cannot do from home outside the UK, but I would do my best to mke it all happen. Issues that must be clarified are: 1) the financing of the website, Kemp Sails cannot be relied upon to support forever, 2) I need help from someone in UK to help organise the annual partty in Cowes, with help from ISC, 3) I am happy to run the website but initial help from someone who knows how such things work, 4) we must have feedback from others who like me have been restoring a minitonner and it's taken longer than hoped/expected, 5) what does everyone want for a single annual event? . If nobody replies then my energy will be quickly exhausted. Please anybody let me know how you may be able to help, if only a willingness to come out and play.
My qualifications are that I first sailed a MINItonner (Glass Onion) in 1983, and I want to make the class also available for boat owners who haven't the will or money to do a full IRC optimisation, and I personally hate upwind/downwind couses after years of performance dinghy sailing.
Please everybody write with thoughts to richard_DOT_salter_AT_t-online_DOT__de, if nobody says a word then I will probably give up. Matt did lots for us and deserves to see something come out of all his efforts. I don't want to see a class where the IRC optimisation costs thousands and gets out of reach of ordinary sailors (viz. quartertonners).

OK all, 3 weeks later and no reaction. Matt please can we talk (I will be in UK in the next few weeks) about how I can get all the info that may become a Minitonner database so I can at least keep everything available in case anyone in the minitonner world shows any interest, then I will get on with making my boat ready to sail, and looking forward to all the wondeful places I am going to go sailing. Will the minitonner cup for RTIR remain to be fought for? Please talk/write to me anyone, I am a pensioner from May 20th and have some time to try and do something constructive. A prize for original IOR boats is always in my head..... Richard
