I sailed SUNDANCER non stop with 2 crew from Kinsale to Howth 171 miles in 31 hours trouble free before she was passed onto new owners. The new owners had only 40 miles to Carlingford Lough but took her out in strong headwinds, tore her headsail and the crew were very seasick. Bad seamanship. Same boat different owner. She is a fantastic little boat and we won all round with her for 7 years in a row. Sad to see her go.

My condolences to SUNDANCER; these things can happen at sea. Its the law of three. One or two problems can be overcome but three makes for a real trying time. Never had seasickness but I've heard it can be totally debilitating. Hi all, Thought it worth mentioning there's also a Dynamo 23. I owned one from 1997 to 2001. Striped her back to the wood (she was built by AP Farrow), beefed up the chines, and gave her some nice new paint and a total refit of hardware and most running rigging and raced her out of Plymouth. Her weakest spot was in 8-12 knts of breeze (although sh could still win). In the light stuff or a breeze she was devastating. Very good sea boat. What used to amaze me about her was her ability to take lumps out of bigger and, supposedly, faster boats to windward in a stiff breeze and sea. She was also very roomy down below. Proper half size chart table, galley and four berths all in the middle of the boat - to pipe cots above traditional seating/berths (forepeak and aft end were empty). Lots of happy memories of that boat in the few years I owned her. One particular run from Dartmouth to Plymouth stands out; three up and wind up the chuff we averaged 11 knots from Star Point to the entrance to Plymouth Sound. I had reason to call David Thomas a few months later (wanted keel bolt torque settings) and mentioned hat run to him. First he expressed his delight that the boat was still racing and winning and then said 'Oh yes, she'd do that'. He also told me he thought the boat capable of crossing the Atlantic safely! (Glol. When I did the ball/arrow thing to prove I was human before posting this, the ball landed on green - the colour I painted the boat's hull!)

I have just brought the Dynamo 25 which needed work. Quite a lot of work has already been done and we plan to complete the rest over the winter. We plan to race under IRC from Brighton and with the Solent Quarter Tonner fleet from Cowes. Usually race from BMYC, ISC and RYS in small keelboats - Sonar, 1720, J70, J80, etc. I would be really grateful if the owners of the other Dynamos could get in touch with advice, especially about IRC Rating - if five were made this thread now represents four of them!

It was listed as a "Dynamo 25" on Ebay! And it looks like the pictures of Sundancer which is definitely 25' - brought the 2017 IRC Certificate for Sundancer - it's 7.63 metres/25 feet. My guess is that it's the "Dynamo 23" TimD raced out of Plymouth as we brought it a few miles away, across the Tamar in Torpoint. Does anybody have any more information on this boat? Also, what do people think about racing Imagination as a Mini Tonner? p.s. I don't think the person who sold us the boat was trying to pull the wool over our eyes - he probably thought it WAS a "Dynamo 25" - we did, until we got out the tape measure!

Second Rogers comments the boat performed admirably. Light and nimble and easy to sail with one/two people. The only drawback is she has a slight weather helm in part due to her nature as a racing boat and is not the best for comfort inside. As an out and out racer she is perfect and will give you good results even against wind and tide. I had a Dynamo 25 called RED SHED, . . and yes it was painted red and built in 1980. As another has commented, these plywood boats sure last well, and mine had a problem only with rot on both gunwales by the aft coach roof, at the shroud Bulkhead and back to the stern about 3 feet. I bought mine in 2002 but it was only yesterday (15th November 2018) that I have suddenly noticed something different between mine and Sundancer. I took the top of the Centreboard case to lift out the Centreboard and see how they had added extra lead and wanted to make sure it was fixed properly. In doing so my memory told me that my mast step was at the FRONT of this removable piece. With having downloaded all the pics of Sundancer, I realized their cover was in two pieces, and the mast was stepped at the back of it ! You can clearly see the separate mounting pad and the expose pulleys for the top of the Lifting keel. Mine were hidden away inside, and this cover piece included the mast step. This would mean the mast was stepped around 12 - 15 inches aft of mine, and so maybe alter the balance of the rig and give less weather helm. In fact the shrouds and the mast are not far off being straight across. This also allowed the boom to go out almost square to the centreline. I checked my pics and sure enough mine mast step is at the front. The only way else that could be, is if there previous owner when they renovated the boat, put the cover piece back on the wrong way. Looking at their pics, it is at the front not like Sundancer.

Hi all,
I am the new owner of Sundancer and she is lying back in Cork again. I bought her from the previous owners in Northern Ireland and trailered her home. She was in a poor condition having been wintered poorly over the years however she did come with a new set of Hyde sails and a trainer so I have done very well. I cleaned her up above and below whole also changing the colour from yellow to gunmetal grey. She's a great little boat and keeps pace with Impalas up wind all on a IRC of 0.837. We win our class on Cork week and Calves week. I plan to do a little more more work on her this winter now that I know where her weaknesses are and hope to be very competitive in IRCA nationals and volvo reggata in Dun Laoghaire in 2019. I'm Keen to understand a bit more about her and her sisters ( how best to race etc and swap notes)
My email is robboreilly@gmail.com. please get in touch.

Rob Rob, I'm having trouble emailing you at the address given. The message is that you should probably post on the IOR Minitonner class group on Facebook that seems to be used more than this board.
