does anybody have any knowledge on the rules regarding outboard motors i have seen lots of people sailing/racing with them locked up at the back. however when i went to burnham i was told we had to put it away. is this just a local rule or are we supposed to take them off all the time when racing?
cheers Ant

As an underwriter, I would say it is daft to have the engine there as it increases the damage in a collision, as a racer, I would say it's daft to have the engine there as it's weight in the wrong place. Most regattas or races have rules about anchors on the stem but I am not sure about the engine. Whenever I've raced a boat with an outboard I've removed it for the reasons above so I've never checked whether it's compulsory.

Ant - It seems to be at the disgression of the race organisers. For the RTI your outboard can't extend behind your rudder. Best bet for you would be to leave it dragging in the water - give the rest of us a chance! (If you could tie a bucket round the prop for extra protection it would be much appreciated)

Stop being a lazy git an put it down below! Less chance of it doing any damage to my nice new paintjob, when you get in the way on the startline! Looks shit hanging off the back of the boat, and I bet it wasn't there when your overhangs were measured!

Suggest that you read IRC rules, under which we race which state that Outboards should be stowed within the boat.
Reasons for doing so:
safety 1) Wont lose your alternative method of propulsion in a stern collission 2) Won't damage another boat if they cross your stern closely only discover your boat is 3 foot longer, you will also lose you alternative method of propulsion.
Performance: 1) having 25kgs plus of metal hanging of your transon is not going to help performance

You sail with an outboard on the back full stop?
Mine lives down below, sail on and off the mooring.
Sailing is just as fast, if not faster, uses less fuel and is very good practice for that day you are using your outboard and it conks out. :-)
